Greek Baked Beans ( Gigandes)


Welcome to another delicious recipe from Plate on a Budget. Today we are showing you how to make this buttery goodness!

Giant baked beans aka Gigandes are a staple in Greek cuisine.

This classic can be found at any Taverna or upscale restaurant in Greece. The combination of rich tomato sauce, wine and aromatic spices used in the recipe, will have you asking for more!

Serve with Feta and crusty bread...and don't forget the wine! OPA!





For this recipe, you will need:


  • 500 grams butter beans

  • 1/4 cup olive oil

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 1 chopped carrot

  • 2 stalks chopped celery

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 2 cups tomato puree or crushed tomatoes

  • 2 cups veggie or chicken broth

  • 1/4 -1/2 cup white wine

  • 2-3 cloves chopped garlic

  • 2-3 scallions chopped

  • flat leaf chopped parsley

  • chilli flakes (according to your taste)

  • 2-3 bay leaves

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • salt & pepper to taste
